-Il fatto che io esisto prova che il mondo non ha alcun senso. Quale senso potrei trovare, infatti, nei tormenti di un uomo infinitamente tragico e infelice, per il quale tutto si riduce in ultima istanza al nulla, e per il quale la sofferenza è la legge di questo mondo? Lo zelo smisurato e la passione folle e paradossale che ho dispiegato per eccellere su questa terra, il sortilegio demoniaco di cui mi sono servito per rivestire un'aureola futura, e tutto l'entusiasmo sprecato in vista di una rinascita organica o di un'aurora interiore si sono dimostrati più deboli della bestialità e dell'irrazionalità del mondo, che ha riversato in me tutte le sue risorse di negatività e di veleno. La vita non resiste alle alte temperature. Così sono giunto alla conclusione che gli uomini più tormentati, il cui dinamismo interiore raggiunge il parossismo, incapaci di rassegnarsi alla tiepidezza abituale, sono votati al crollo. Nello sfacelo di quanti vivono in regioni insolite si ritrova l'aspetto demoniaco della vita, ma anche la sua insufficienza, il che spiega come mai essa sia il privilegio dei mediocri. Solo costoro vivono a una temperatura normale; gli altri si consumano a temperature in cui la vita non resiste, in cui non si riesce a respirare se non stando con un piede al di là di questa […] Se solo potessi portare il mondo intero all'agonia, per purificare le radici stesse della vita! Le incendierei con fiamme ardenti e insinuanti, non per distruggerle, ma per dar loro una linfa e un calore diversi. Il fuoco che appiccherei al mondo non porterebbe alla rovina, ma a una trasfigurazione cosmica, essenziale. Così la vita si abituerebbe alle alte temperature, e non sarebbe più un ricettacolo di mediocrità. E forse, in questo sogno, la morte stessa cesserebbe di essere immanente alla vita.
